Tel Dor Dig, Israel

Paul Smith

July 2007

Archaeology is a “hands-on” method of studying history. With a little imagination, it can be a way of experiencing history first-hand! This summer (2007) Pastor Paul Smith along with friend and fellow West Sider Merrill Greenlee joined staff, students, and volunteers from the University of Washington and Hebrew University in Jerusalem for the dig season (5 weeks) at Tel Dor on the coast of Israel. Dor was a Canaanite port city on the Mediterranean Sea during Old Testament times. It is mentioned in the Bible in connection with Joshua and later with Solomon.

Paul and Merrill are scheduled to report back to West Side on their experience. Not only was this an opportunity to learn on a graduate level how archaeology is done, but to enjoy the thrill of discovery, and maybe uncover a clue or two to help archaeologists and historians solve the “Cold Case” mysteries which surround history. This page will allow you to see a few pictures from their summer adventure, as well as some of the many friends they enjoyed. A special welcome to any of their fellow “Dorians” (Doritos?) who visit our website!
