Boy ScoutsTroop News (2/25/06)This year our Troop continues to grow as we welcomed in three new Scouts. We also are expecting an additional six Scouts this spring. Tony Mustello achieved his Eagle rank. Way to go TONY! Summer Camp - July Troop 282 sent 24 boys to camp at Fire Mountain in Arlington, WA. We had great weather and the boys earned 124 merit badges. This June we’ll be back at good old Camp Parsons. Mt. Rainier Climbed - Paul Brzoska, Jeff Brzoska and Scott Brzoska led another group to the top of Mt. Rainier this summer. Two Scouts, Sam Vial and Tony Mustello, reached the summit. The conditions could not have been better. Skills Hike - The skills hike is a 5-day trip that gives the 2- to 3-year Scouts a chance to develop their leadership skills on the brand new incoming Scouts. They teach the new Scouts all of the hiking and camping skills, such as setting up a tent, cooking a meal and properly packing a pack. The Scout leaders were Chad Lehman, Ryan Lee and Jay Weeks. These boys had their hands full because we had 18 newer Scouts participate in the hike. New Youth Leadership Training - This year Chad Lehman, Reilyn Garton and Will Mentor attended a week-long, intense training session where the boys learned how to lead and inspire the Scout Troop. Bath Lakes Trip - Paul Brzoska led a group of our Venture Scouts to the Bath Lakes area this past August. This is always a fun and very challenging trip; they covered over 65 miles. This is the kind of trip for the advanced Scout who is ready to challenge himself. Quinault River 50 Miler - Another challenge was a 50 mile hike for 6 Scouts led by Dave Haines, Chuck Shull and Brain Stata. They camped at various lakes in the Lake Quinalt area of the Olympics. The Scouts were John Jinneman, Alex Haines, Jay Weeks, Ryan Lee, Max Shull and Will Shull. Winter Activities - Once again, the training, practice, and teamwork paid off for Troop 282 at the Klondike Derby. The Keebler patrol tied for 1st place in the Derby; they also won the Klondike Derby sled race. This is an inter-Troop competition with 16 other Troops participating. In February we had a very successful snow cave outing at Paradise on Mt. Rainier where the boys had a great opportunity to fine-tune their cold weather camping skills. Cub ScoutsPack News (2/25/06)This year Pack 282 concluded celebrating the 75th anniversary of Cub Scouting in America. West Side Presbyterian Church has graciously chartered Pack 282 since 1953. Our annual Blue and Gold Banquet will be held on Tuesday, March 21, 2006 in Howell Auditorium. This year’s theme, “Cubstruction”, symbolizes creative designs and thinking in addition to our character building program. As well as weekly Den meetings, a monthly Pack meeting and various Den filed trips, our other events include: Scout Sea Hawks Day, Klondike (Webelos) Derby; Bowling Tournament; Rain Gutter Regatta; Marble Tournament; Mom & Me Camps; Scouting for Food; Winter/Summer Camps; Pinewood Racing Derby; and West Seattle Hi-Yu Parade. The various Cub Scouts are organized into age/grade appropriate Dens and meet weekly to work on individual advancements, play games, do crafts, learn new skills, go on fun outings/field trips such as a local firehouse or an ecological cruise down the Duwamish aboard the 47-foot Sea Scout manned “Yankee Clipper”. This year Pack 282's older Webelos Scouts competed in and won the “Overall” District Klondike Derby in January near Snoqualmie Pass. Congratulations Webelos! The Cub Scouting program provides opportunities for families to work and play together while promoting citizenship and duty to God and country. Once again, thank you West Side for over 50 years of support!! Parent/Leader VolunteersAs always, these activities are only possible because of parent/leader volunteers! We appreciate all that you do!! Our current Pack leaders include: Cub Master - Rick Lehman |
