Boy Scouts

Troop News (2/11/07)

This year our Troop continues to grow as we welcomed in 6 new Scouts. We also are expecting an additional 12 Scouts this fall. Alex Haines achieved his Eagle rank. Way to go Alex!

Summer Camp: This year Troop 282 sent 32 boys to summer camp at Camp Parsons in Brinnon, WA. We had great weather and were very productive in achieving merit badges. The following Court of Honor we handed out 151 of them! This July we’ll be at Camp Piggott near Monroe, WA.

Mt. Rainier Climbed: Paul Brzoska, Jeff Brzoska, Peter Hogan, Paul Garton, Reilyn Garton, Peter Vial, Sam Vial, James Saadeh, Mac Brown, and Michael Cross all summitted Mt. Rainier this summer. We had 5 Scouts summit this time. We were led up by Paul Brzoska and Peter Hogan, the conditions could not have been better.

Skills Hike: The skills hike is a 5-day trip that gives the 2- to 3-year Scouts a chance to develop their leadership skills on the brand new incoming Scouts. They teach the new Scouts all of the hiking and camping skills, such as setting up a tent, cooking a meal and properly packing a pack. We had 18 boys and 6 dads go on this outing.

New Youth Leadership Training: This year we had Ryan Lee and Jay Weeks attended NYLT. This is a week-long, intense training session where the boys learn how to lead and inspire the Scout troop.

Summer Trips: This summer was extremely busy for our Troop. We went on 7 long-term outings: The skills hike, Camp Parsons, the Ptarmigan traverse, the Haggen Lakes trip, the Rainier summit, the Olympic trip and the canoe trip. We had lots of Scout and adult participation to pull all of these trips off.

Winter Activities: Once again, the training, practice and teamwork paid off for Troop 282. The Keebler patrol got 1st place in the Klondike Derby. This is an inter-troop competition with 16 other troops participating, almost 300 Scouts total.

Cub Scouts

Pack News (2/11/07)

Pack 282 is tremendously grateful for the support of the church over the past year.

We have 39 Cubs at different age levels (grades 1 through 5) participating in our activities. We have used the building remodel as an opportunity to make sure we get each den “out of the house,” and on field trips or hikes. The annual popcorn fundraiser was a success and has afforded us the chance to have new activities at Alki beach (a rain gutter regatta) and at Camp Long (April’s pop bottle space derby extravaganza), in addition to our traditional activities such as the Pinewood Derby and the Blue and Gold banquet.

Parent/Leader Volunteers

These activities are only possible because of parent/leader volunteers! Our current Pack leaders include:

Cub Master - John Demaree
Webelos 1 - Craig Chamberlain
Webelos 2 - Jim Pennie
Bear Den - John Lidstrom
Wolf Den - Trisha Montemayor
and lots of parents.

Thank you volunteers!

Most importantly, all the Cubs are benefiting from character education as they grow into young men. Meetings are Tuesdays at 7pm throughout the school year.

For more information call John Demaree (923-1911) or the church office (935-4477), or visit the Web links listed in the left column.
