Developing your own Disaster Plan

The West Side disaster preparedness and response committee is meeting to develop a readiness plan for West Side. Be sure YOU are prepared: DEVELOP A PERSONAL AND FAMILY DISASTER PLAN TODAY.

Here are some tips to prepare for a disaster:

  • Choose a safe place in each room such as beside a safe bed or under a sturdy table or desk. Hold on.
  • Have people listed to contact after a disaster, especially someone out of state to serve as a family contact person.
  • Water: Store water for three days use, three gallons for each person in your family.
  • Obtain a waterproof container to store supplies. Store enough non-perishable food for three days for each person in your family that require no refrigeration or cooking and little or no water.
  • Have a basic first aid kit stored with at least three days supply of required medication.
  • Store tools and supplies for three days such as battery powered AM radio, flashlights, ABC fire extinguisher, soap, roll of plastic sheeting and tape.
  • Include in your storage extra eyeglasses, baby diapers, important papers and pet supplies.
  • Have some extra clothes stored.
  • Know where to shut off your utilities such as gas and water.
  • For more information, refer to the more detailed disaster plan in the Health Resource center in the narthex. This is serious and important survival information.
