More about Men's Ministry

The men's ministry hosts events meant to draw men into a camaraderie bound together by Jesus Christ. Fellowship, service, spiritual renewal, and reflection upon the ministry itself are an emphasis.

  • Fellowship - men need opportunities to develop and strengthen friendships with other Christian guys who may, down the road, be sources of both encouragement and Biblical accountability. Many friendships between men occur within the context of “activity.” Past activities have included golf outings and a recent ping-pong "tournament."

  • A spirit of service as well as fellowship gather men together to serve the church corporately. Annually, the men serve at the December Women’s Banquet as waiters and dishwashers.

  • Spiritual renewal and growth - men need to “recalibrate” themselves as servants of the Lord. The men’s annual retreat challenges men to focus on their calling to serve our Lord Jesus Christ. Time is set aside for small group discussions focusing on the retreat theme and personal testimonies are balanced by time for activities (such as hiking, canoeing, softball) and conversations by the campfire.

  • Not only is re-dedication to Christ an emphasis, but also a reflection on the ministry itself. For the first time in its eight years of existence at West Side, the Men’s Ministry has taken a look at itself critically. From its mission statement through each activity and event, the steering committee prayerfully considered what to keep, what to put away, and what to begin. One new and exciting offshoot of this process was the formation of a small group; currently seven men strong, this group of West Siders meet bi-weekly to discuss the books such as Wild at Heart by John Eldredge, a Christian author, in light of Biblical truths.

As time marches forward, the Men’s Ministry is looking to become a more visible and become a more viable conduit to bring men more closely in line with their calling to serve Christ, their families, and the larger community. Future plans include a men’s retreat and fall banquet. Yet it is important that the Men’s Ministry not be directed by events, but by the task of nurturing vital relationships with other men, and, most importantly, nurturing that life-giving relationship with Christ.
