The Power of a Small GroupWhen it comes to our Christian walk, how important is it to be involved in a small group? I have often asked myself this question. When I look back at the small groups I have been involved with over the years I realize that, when done correctly, no other ministry has greater potential for life-changing connection and community. Admittedly, I have not always felt comfortable participating in the small group that I committed to, but I would notice that as the group matured, a wonderful atmosphere of camaraderie, fellowship, belonging, and caring would emerge, leading to spiritual growth and discipleship. Are you experiencing the spiritual growth and friendships that can come out of small group involvement? Have you thought about being involved with a small group, but are just not sure where to turn? West Side has a number of small groups underway that meet on a regular basis, including:
The invitation to you, if you are not currently involved in a small group, is that you seriously consider joining this ministry where life-altering transformation continually takes place. Participants are also finding meaningful relationships, and believers are maturing into fully committed followers of Christ in the context of biblical community. Finally, please consider the way Jesus modeled this in His selection of the Twelve. While ministering to the multitudes, He developed close relationships with just a handful of guys. Please contact Pastor Louis Platt if you feel God calling you to participate in this potentially life-changing ministry called simply “a small group.” Article submitted by Michael McGaffey, published in The Good News (monthly newsletter). |
The early Christian Church was characterized by a multiplicity of smaller fellowships. Each member of these fellowships was actively involved in the life and dynamic growth of the church. We at West Side Presbyterian are reliving something of what the early believers experienced through our small group ministry.
We currently sponsor 27 small groups. These vary in size from three to sixteen participants. Small groups normally meet weekly or bi-weekly in the homes of the group members. However, many groups meet here at the church for reasons of convenience. Each group selects a time for meeting that will accommodate all group members.
We have many different types of groups. There are Bible discussion and application groups, men's groups, women's groups, couple's groups, singles and couples together, mixed age groups, same age groups, support groups and others.
We believe that the particular small group in which we participate make a significant contribution toward our spiritual growth in Christ. Each group is centered on the Bible as the authoritative Word of God and is designed so that the group member becomes a more thoroughly devoted follower of Christ. Small groups provide the opportunity to:
